Bushnell: Find Your Way For The Holidays

For those who made it through Black Friday alive and without having completed their holiday shopping, we have your back. And today's item is a great stocking stuffer, but would also come in handy during the journeys to come. After all, who hasn't faced the parking crowds during a big sale and forgotten where they had parked?

With the Bushnell Backtrack D-tour GPS, that fear can be put to rest. This is a pretty fun upgrade to a specific family of devices- not really true GPS systems, instead, they are assistants that use GPS to help you save and get back to specific locations. You can save up to five spots, and then use the D-tour to navigate to them later. Of course, it won't give you directions like a traditional unit, but guides you via an arrow like a compass, unerringly towards where you need to go.

The readout also displays your time, temperature, and altitude, and can show you a couple of fun things like your distance traveled and average pace. Up to 48 hours of trip data can be stored, and later retrieved and transferred to a computer (PC or Mac), allowing you to examine your routes and overlay it on topographical maps. The D-tour weighs only about six ounces, and is well-built- we dropped ours a couple of times to no ill effects. The screen is hard to see in the sun, unfortunately, but it is quite large and there is a backlight for nighttime use.

Two colors are available- green and red- and it's a great buy for hikers who can end up in the backcountry with no cell service and far from a trail. You need three AAA batteries to operate the device, and ours lasted throughout several days of regular use. Also, the accuracy was pretty impressive... once we could get a fix. The only major downside that we noticed is a fairly long startup time, as our sample had some trouble locking onto satellites, and while testing in urban environments and indoors it was exceptionally difficult for it to do so. In other words, this is aimed at a pretty specific group of people- likely hikers or people who do need to find their way in an outdoor setting.
