First, let’s review the backpack’s exterior, which is made of heavy-gauge nylon that feels rugged and durable. At first glance, the backpack looks like it will be heavy, but it is surprisingly lightweight, weighing less than 3 pounds. One of our favorite features is the backpack’s semi-hard, waterproof, molded EVA base, which enables you to place the backpack down on wet surfaces without having to worry about equipment getting damp. The molded base also ensures the backpack will generally remain upright. Even with no equipment inside, or with various compartments opened, the backpack did not tip over. The backpack features padded air mesh on its shoulder straps and back. The straps fit comfortably on us with the backpack fully loaded, and the backpack features a strap management system that keeps excess strap material out of the user’s way. Industrial strength hook and loop straps on the side of the backpack are ideal for holding most tripods or other bulky items. The exterior also has four well-placed, lightly padded accessory pockets that are great for storing extra batteries, your phone, and other smaller accessories.

Now for the meaty stuff. The backpack’s interior is thoughtfully designed, and it’s all the details. The camera compartment fits most SLR cameras, up to 10.4” x 4.7” by 5.6”, with an attached lens up to 9.8” in length. We love the SLR compartment’s neoprene hammock suspension system, which suspends the camera above the bottom of the case, thereby eliminating impact. The compartment is lined with scratch-resistant memory foam to protect the camera’s delicate LED screen. The SLR compartment can be opened separately from the backpack’s main compartment if the user wants to access only the camera – a convenient feature. The main compartment features padded, felt-covered, and contoured dividers with hook-and-loop straps that can be easily rearranged to accommodate the equipment inside. The main compartment is ideal for storing extra lenses, flash, and other equipment. We were able to rearrange the foam pieces easily and fit our equipment snugly. The padding can be removed entirely to use the backpack as a regular backpack. The padded laptop compartment, located in the back of the backpack, fits laptops measuring 15.4” x 10.4” x 1”, and accommodates most 16” PC laptops and 17” MacBook Pros. Our laptop felt well-protected in the backpack.

Our one gripe with the backpack is the bright yellow color of the interior. We wish the backpack had a few different interior color options, but this quibble does not take away from the backpack’s overall excellent layout and construction. The bright interior serves the very important function of enabling the user to clearly locate equipment in the backpack.

We thought this backpack was head and shoulders above the Crumpler Sinking Barge backpack we reviewed, and more affordable than Crumpler’s C-List Celebrity Bag.

The $134.99 retail price is a bit on the higher end of this range, but Amazon offers the backpack for just over $90. And after all, doesn’t your expensive camera equipment deserves a safe home while traveling? This backpack is sure to impress even the most critical of shutterbugs.
