Kelty Sine 20: Sleep Dry, Pack Light
Despite what Punxsutawney Phil said last week during Groundhog Day, this winter hasn’t been too bad for much of the United States. The more traditional forecasts don’t seem too bad, which means we might get an early spring and an extended camping season. Until then, we’re avoiding alpine sites unless we can stay in a lodge. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t had a chance to use some of our equipment, from pads and shoes to water purifiers and headlamps. And a couple of the coziest nights we’ve spent has been in today’s piece of gear.
The Kelty Sine 20 sleeping bag is available in both men’s and women’s, regular and long styles, as well as a slightly lighter version meant for temperatures above 35 degrees. The model as tested is rated for temps as low as 20 degrees, and uses 800-fill DriDown insulation with an adaptable design that can work in warmer conditions as well. Plus it weighs in at only about two pounds and a few ounces. The water-resistant finish helps keep moisture out, and even in a soggy environment, the Sine will dry quickly.
We liked the built-in pillow pocket, allowing you to use some clothes to make yourself a headrest. And though the shape is mummy-style, the footbox is larger than some, allowing you to move a bit without feeling so constricted. In fact, we’d almost describe the Sine as roomy! But the most visible and important difference are the zippers- a lower one allows ventilation and improved circulation, and they brag about their Arc zipper system, which is meant to offer a more natural zipper movement. Indeed, it was a more comfortable experience- plus, the parallel diagonal zipper stripes add a nice aesthetic touch too. We definitely appreciate that Kelty is pushing boundaries and trying new things when it comes to camping gear, like the inflatable Mach 4 we checked out a couple of years back.
Kelty calls the green-and-grey color combination woodbine. Like most sleeping bags, a compression stuff sack and mesh storage sack are included, and it packs up tight. Available now, online and in stores, expect to spend around $279.99 for the innovative Kelty Sine 20 sleeping bag.
