ABUS Bordo X-Plus 6500 Bike Lock: Fold It Away
It’s back to school season, which means that it’s time to look into biking. If you’re heading to college in NYC, you should probably pick up a bike lock, and a good one at that. It’s true for any urban environment, but especially in SF and Manhattan, where bike thefts are fairly common. Even if you’re using the new CitiBike ride-sharing system to borrow a bike, you may want a good lock to protect that bike while you’re in a store.
Some of the best bicycle locks that we’ve tested have come German firm ABUS. And while they make a wide range of locks- like the ABUS Steel-O-Flex 1000 that we reviewed earlier this year- one of the coolest is the new Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500- an upgrade to their Bordo line, which we previously looked at and liked a look, with the Lite model. The 6500 is an upgrade in every way, meaning that it is now considered a premium maximum security lock, recommended for use even in areas with fairly high theft rates.
The Bordo line combines aspects of classic flexible cable locks and harder, sturdier U-locks. Instead of chain links or anything similar, the flip-out, fold-up lock acts kind of like a hoop made of steel bars. It’s a unique look, and a pretty cool design that offers enough space for use around most poles or places that you’d need to leave your ride. The lock body is made of special hardened steel, and the rivets are incredibly tough.
Available in a few colors, ours was white, but red, black, and gray models are also available. One nifty part is that the colors don’t feel like they will chip away or peel or fade- the lock is coated in a shockproof synthetic material that provides protection against damage to the bicycle’s frame. Plus, ABUS thought about how to transport the lock- instead of carrying a bandolier or belt of steel like so many messengers, you can fold your lock up into the cute carrying case that’s easily attachable to your frame. It’s still heavy, to be clear, at around 2.5 pounds.
To be clear, no lock is theftproof, and any lock will last only so long against someone devoted to carrying off your bicycle. But the ABUS Bordo X-Plus 6500 is the most secure lock that we’ve seen in such a compact package. And the good looks help! It’s not the perfect solution for every situation- the loop is still pretty small, not that much larger than a typical U-lock- but offers a good balance of portability and durability, along with cost. Available now online and in stores, expect to spend around $150.
